A Dutchman who allegedly pushed an Airbnb renter down the stairs of a flat in Amsterdam was arrested on Sunday and is now under investigation, according to police.

NOS broadcaster reported on Sunday that the row was about the time of check-out for a property that had been rented out by the man’s wife.

The victim was reportedly a friend and employee of South African photographer Zanele Muholi, whose work is currently being exhibited in the Stedelijk Museum, claims NOS.

Muholi, who portrays black lesbian, homosexual and transgender identity in South Africa, alleged on Instagram that there was racism involved, since her friend is black.

In a video on Instagram, a woman is heard asking a man why he is being emotional and taking her things, and he apparently pushes her. She then falls all the way down a flight of stairs, the man curses, runs down and calls out to get an ambulance.

The Instagram post claims: ‘She collapsed and ended up in hospital. She suffered internal injuries and bruises…This is racism and can’t be justified…violence on black bodies as you can see in this video.’

A police spokesman told DutchNews.nl: ‘It was related to a man and woman and argument about the check-out time of an Airbnb rental. The man is now free. The police are now investigating and the man is a suspect, but the woman is fortunately out of hospital.’

On Monday, NOS reported that the chief executive of Airbnb Brian Chesky intends to contact the woman pushed down the stairs, while director diversity director David King said it was ‘repulsive behaviour’ and threatened a lifelong ban from the platform.
