A16 motorway bridge shut for two hours as police hunt cashpoint thieves

Dutch police car close-upThe A16 motorway was closed for more than two hours during Monday’s rush-hour after police thwarted an attempted raid on a supermarket cashpoint.

At least one person has been arrested following a police chase across the Oude Maas just south of Dordrecht. The would-be thieves fired shots and rammed the side of a police car as they fled the scene.

Police were alerted at around 3am when the alarm went off at an Albert Heijn supermarket in ‘s-Gravendeel. They gave chase across the river towards the A16/A17 intersection at Klaverpolder. One of the getaway cars was later recovered.

One person who tried to hide out near the supermarket was traced and arrested, and police said there were indications that others involved in the incident were still in the area. It is unclear whether the gang were planning to blow up the cashpoint with explosives or ram-raid the supermarket.

The motorway was shut between 6am until around 8.30am while forensic teams inspected the scene. Train services were also briefly suspended after a person was seen on the line between Lage Zwaluwe and Dordrecht.
