Ajax draw Schalke in Europa League quarter finals
Amsterdam football club Ajax will meet German side Schalke in the quarter finals of this year’s Europa League.
It is the first time since 2003 that Ajax, who put out FC Copenhagen, have made it so far in European competition. Ajax will meet Schalke at home on April 13 and play away a week later.
Ajax coach Peter Bosz said after the draw: ‘My first thought was Schalke are a big club in a top-level competition. They have a lot of international experience and a big, modern stadium. We have to analyse their team very well.’
Schalke’s line-up includes striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar who spent three seasons at Ajax where he scored more than 100 goals.
Meanwhile, Ajax’ 17-year-old defender Matthijs de Ligt has been called up by national coach Danny Blind for Oranje’s friendlies against Bulgaria and Italy later this month.
