The Netherlands is trailing on EU energy targets

While the EU as a whole is making good progress on meeting renewable energy targets, a number of countries, including the Netherlands, will have to step up their efforts, the European Commission said on Wednesday.

The Netherlands is supposed to ensure 14% of its energy supply comes from renewable resources and carbon dioxide emissions are cut by 25% by 2020.

In terms of renewable energy, the Netherlands, France and Luxembourg were the only three countries which were not on target to meet their goals last year, the commission said.

The economic affairs ministry said in a reaction that the commission had based its findings on outdated figures and that Netherlands is now expected to meet the targets by 2020.
