The impact of Tuesday morning’s power cut in Amsterdam continued to be felt throughout the day and Dutch railway company NS said that the problems on the trains will continue into the evening.

The power supply fell out around 4am in much of Amsterdam, Zaandam and Landsmeer, leaving some 360,000 households without power. Grid manager Liander says the problem arose in a substation where high voltage power is transformed into low voltage electricity for distribution.

By 9am, electricity supplies had resumed but the effect on train services was considerable because the power cut had knocked out the railway IT system. NS said that disruption would continue for much of the day.

Train services between Amsterdam, Schiphol, Utrecht and Lelystad are particularly badly affected, NS said.

Some 20,000 homes which are warmed via the city heating system were also left without heat for several hours. Slotervaart hospital cancelled all operations and other hospitals were forced to switch on their emergency generators.
