Daan and Anna (just) top the list of most popular baby names in the Netherlands last year, knocking Liam and Emma from the top spots.

In total, 681 Daans were born. Noah and Sem followed in second and third place. Anna was given as a first name to 665 baby girls, just beating Emma, Tess and Sophie which shared second place with 664.

Taking variations into account, Sarah, Zara or Sara would have topped the list with 1,046 reports. Luuk, Luc and Luke topped the boy’s list with 804.

De Jong, Jansen and De Vries head the list of most common surnames.

Civil servants are allowed to refuse new names which have not been registered before if they consider them to be inappropriate. Parents can then go to court in an effort to have the ruling changed. The longest boy’s name given last year was Danley-Maikeljunior. For girls, it was the more moderate sounding Christina-Alexandra.

Broadcaster RTL scoured the complete list of names to come up with some of the more unusual ones. These include girls named Svastika, Shoe-Jainely and Tippie-Tippe and boys named T’cxzayneau, Q’ZHN, Boef (crook), Ba, Divinepraise and Bentley-Maxim.

The popular names list is published every year by the social insurance bank SVB which pays out child benefits. In total, 88,494 boys and 84,286 girls were born in the Netherlands.
