ProRail ordered to refund rail companies €8m after overcharging them
Dutch railway track operator ProRail has been told to refund regional rail service companies Arriva, Connexxion, Syntus and Veolia €8m because it has overcharged them in the previous two years, local broadcaster RTV Utrecht said on Tuesday.
The four companies had made a complaint to the railway regulator ACM after ProRail put up its charges by 18% in 2015 and 2016. That is the equivalent of an extra €50m in costs, RTV Utrecht said.
The ACM said a year ago that ProRail, which is 100% state owned, should provide better evidence for increasing its charges. The new calculations show that ProRail had incorrectly included one item when calculating the fees and this should be refunded, the market watchdog has now decided.
