Construction workers twice as likely to be off work after an accident
Workers in the construction sector are twice as likely to take time off because of a work-related accident than the average employee, the national statistics office CBS said on Monday.
In total, just 1.4% of the Dutch workforce had at least one day off in 2015 because of a work-related accident.
The accident rate was highest in the construction injury, where 2.8% of workers were off for at least a day because of a health and safety issue. In the hospitality industry and in manufacturing, 2.2% of the workforce took time off because of an accident.
Trade union FNV Bouw told news agency ANP that more needs to be done to improve health and safety in the construction sector. ‘There is a fatal accident every two weeks,’ project leader Willem Dijkhuizen said.
