Amsterdam’s Arena will be renamed Johan Cruijff stadium: AD
The name of Amsterdam’s main football stadium Arena is likely to be changed to the Johan Cruijff stadium, the AD said on Thursday.
The family of the former international who died in March has reached agreement on the name change with Arena officials, the paper said.
The Arena is owned by football club Ajax, the city council and private investors.
One main obstacle to the renaming remains, the AD said. Cruijff’s family is keen to ensure that the stadium’s name would not be coupled with a sponsor at a future date, as is the case at Arsenal (Emirates Stadium) and FC Twente (Grolsch Veste)
According to the AD some shareholders are opposed to this because it would stop a considerable source of potential income.
