Two arrested for murder committed 13 years ago
Two men have been arrested for a notorious murder 13 years ago following the intervention of a television crime show.
A 55-year-old man from Boekel turned himself into the police after the broadcast. A second man, aged 43, was arrested shortly afterwards.
The two were picked up in connection with the killing of Alex Wiegmink, who was found dead in a burned out car in Noord-Brabant. He had last been seen while jogging in the Posbank nature reserve and the killing became known as the Posbank murder.
Wiegmink had no criminal links and police suspect he may have been in the wrong place at the wrong time and possibly witnessed a crime.
According to tv crime reporter Pieter R de Vries, the men who have been arrested both have a criminal past.
Broadcaster NOS said on Thursday there are some 1,400 cold cases still waiting to be solved in the Netherlands, including rapes, murders and armed robberies.
