‘Rotterdam overtakes The Hague as a tourist draw’
The number of tourists visiting Rotterdam has gone up for the fifth consecutive year, according to new figures from the city’s marketing department and published by RTL news.
In total, 205,000 tourists visited the port city in the first five months of the year, a rise of 23% and the sharpest growth of any Dutch city, RTL said.
Rotterdam has now overtaken The Hague to become the second most popular city destination, the figures show. The city has been well placed in a number of international tourism lists in recent years and has been praised for its innovative architecture, such as the massive De Rotterdam development and the new Markthal.
Amsterdam tops the tourism list with nearly 2.4 million visitors in the five months to end May, a rise of 14%. Visitor numbers to The Hague were up 8% at 190,000. Utrecht and Maastricht are in joint fourth place on the list, compiled using figures from the national statistics office CBS.
