Dutch bike maker Accell benefits from the rise of the electric bicycle
Dutch bike maker Accell, which produces the Batavus and Sparta brands, said on Friday that the sale of electric bicycles had again risen sharply in the first six months of this year.
Despite the bad weather in the Netherlands and abroad, e-bike sales were up 39% on the same period in 2015, the company said in a statement. E-bikes now account for 43% of the company’s total sales.
The popularity of e-bikes rose particularly sharply in Germany but were also up in the Netherlands, the company said. Accell is European e-bike market leader.
Sales of traditional bikes fell 15% but touring bikes were stable, the company said. In total, group sales rose 10% over the first six months of 2016 to €630m. Net profit was up 7% at €34m.
Accell, which also produces bike parts and accessories, is listed on the Amsterdam stock exchange.
