Heavy rainfall led to the worst traffic jams on the Dutch roads so far this year, motoring organisation ANWB said on Monday.

By 08.15, there were 757 kilometres of traffic jams nationwide, well over the year’s previous record of around 500. During a normal Monday rush hour, there are around 200 kilometres of jams on the Dutch roads.

The longest jams were on the A2 heading from Maastricht to Utrecht and on the A4 from Rotterdam to Amsterdam, the ANWB said.

The KNMI weather bureau had issued a code yellow weather warning for heavy rain in Zuid-Holland, Utrecht and Gelderland.

Overnight some 35 millimetres fell in the region and that is expected rise to as much as 50 millimetres by the end of the day. On average some 61 millimetres of rain fall in May.
