Two men have been arrested in the Netherlands in connection with an international investigation into illegal gambling, the public prosecution department said on Wednesday.

The arrests were made during raids on 15 locations in the Netherlands, Germany and Austria.

The prosecutor said the two men, both from Enschede, were the gang leaders and have made more than €1m from illegal gambling. One of the men was arrested in Germany and was found to be carrying €45,000 in cash. The Netherlands is to ask for his extradition.

The investigation, which was started last year following a tip off from the gambling authority, focused on illegal betting on football matches.
