Water transport of dangerous material rises: CBS

economic growth exports rotterdam portThe amount of dangerous material being transported through the Netherlands on its inland waterways rose 11% to 224 million tonnes since 2014, the central statistics office CBS said on Friday.

This means 40% of all the flammable, explosive or poisonous substances being transported around the country goes by water, according to the CBS.

In 2005, the figure was 31%.

Just over 50% of dangerous material is moved via pipelines, down from 59% in 2005, the CBS figures show. Road transport was down from 8% in 2005 to 6% in 2014, and train transport fell from 2% to 1%.
