Van Rijn facing new calls to fix personal care budget system

The PGB system has been beset with problems.

Junior health minister Martin van Rijn is expected to come under renewed pressure from MPs this week over the troubled system of personal care payments, AD reports.

A majority of MPs are believed to be in favour of taking the administration of personal care budgets (PGBs) out of the hands of the social insurance bank (SVB). A motion calling on Van Rijn to find an alternative provider is expected to be put forward when MPs debate the issue on Tuesday.

Since the SVB took control of the payment system last year tens of thousands of care providers have been paid too late, the wrong amount or not at all.

The difficulties were blamed on the complex rules governing the personal budgets and a computer system that was unfit for the task. The ongoing crisis led to the sacking of the head of the SVB, Nicoly Vermeulen, earlier this year.

Sjoerd Potters, a member of the coalition VVD party, said the SVB had run out of chances to correct its shortcomings. ‘The SVB has done its best to tackle the problems, but the time has come to look for a different route,’ he said.
