PSV out of Champions League after key tie goes to penalties

champions leaguePSV Eindhoven failed to reach the quarter finals of the Champions League competition on Tuesday night after losing 8-7 on penalties following extra time.

The match itself, like the first leg, ended in a 0-0 draw and extra time failed to provide any goals. Luciano Narsingh, who was brought in two minutes before the end of extra time to replace Luuk de Jong, failed to score during the penalties.

Coach Philip Cocu said after the game he had no choice but to take De Jong off the pitch. ‘He had had it. He had cramp in both legs. I had to bring him off,’ Cocu said.

Despite failing to move on in the competition, Cocu said he was proud of his squad. ‘We played with class and showed tactical discipline. We came very close to the quarter finals and Jeroen Zoet almost stopped a penalty. We were a little short on luck.’
