Population set to hit 17 million later this month
The population of the Netherlands will officially swell to 17 million around March 21, the national statistics office CBS said on Friday.
The 17 millionth resident is slightly more likely to be an immigrant than a baby, the CBS said. Last year 200,000 immigrants moved to the Netherlands and 170,000 babies were born.
If the newcomer is an immigrant, he or she is likely to be Polish, Syrian or a returning Dutch expat.
The population of the Netherlands topped 16 million some 15 years ago. The CBS expects it will take a further 18 years to hit the 18 million mark.
