A 23-year-old woman will appear in court in Rotterdam on Wednesday on suspicion of being a member of a terrorist organisation, broadcaster Nos says on Tuesday afternoon.

The woman was arrested at Schiphol airport earlier this month on her return from Syria, Nos quotes the public prosecution department as saying. The department wants the court to remand her in custody while their investigation continues.

The woman, said to be of Moroccan origin, reportedly left for Syria around a year ago. According to the Telegraaf, she has been deported to the Netherlands by Turkey.

By March 1, some 240 Dutch nationals had travelled to Syria or Iraq, of whom 42 had been killed and 40 had returned home.

Some 40% of the 160 Dutch nationals still in Syria are women, the Dutch counter-terrorism office NCTV said earlier this month. Around four or five people are leaving every month.
