Eredivisie weekend round up: Feyenoord finally halt winless run
The long wait for Feyenoord is over, PSV and Ajax forge on, while the Twente resurgence continues, writes Neil Adderley.
Excelsior 2 v 0 NEC Nijmegen: Van Weert double sinks NEC
A goal in each half from striker Tom van Weert eased growing relegation worries for Excelsior. Van Weert opened the scoring against the run play on 13 minutes after firing home a dipping strike from 25 yards.
NEC had started brightly but after finding themselves a goal behind they failed to respond. Excelsior dominated the visitors, and Van Weert finally sealed a crucial first win since November for Excelsior in the closing stages.
Twente 2 v 0 Groningen: Fifth victory in a row for resurgent Twente
Twente recorded a fifth straight win to continue an incredible turnaround of fortune in the Eredivisie. The hosts went ahead on 16 minutes when Ajax loanee Zakaria El Azzouzi stabbed home at the near post.
While Oussama Idrissi missed a glorious opening to take Groningen level into the break, Twente continued to threaten and were rewarded when a Jerson Cabral strike settled the tie.
Defeat leaves a disappointing Groningen 10th in the table, while Twente move up to 11th place.
PSV Eindhoven 2 v 0 ADO Den Haag: Champions leave it late in Eindhoven
PSV eventually broke the ADO resistance with two goals in the final 18 minutes. The league leaders, who had held Atletico Madrid to a scoreless midweek draw, failed to take advantage of a host of first half chances.
However, the visitors rearguard action was finally breached when Chelsea loanee Marco van Ginkel stabbed home from close range on 72 minutes.
And the three points were secured ten minutes later through captain and Eredivisie top scorer Luuk de Jong.
Cambuur Leeuwarden v PEC Zwolle: Byrne strike gives Cambuur first points of 2016
Irish midfielder Jack Byrne fired home an 85th minute winner to move Cambuur off the foot of the table. Despite not having claimed a point this year, Cambuur began brightly with Martijn Barto and Sander van der Struik almost breaking the deadlock.
And the hosts were given a boost after Ouasim Bouy was shown a second yellow card with 30 minutes remaining.
Cambuur pushed for the opener and the goal finally arrived when Byrne hit an angled drive into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area.
A much needed win lifts Cambuur off the bottom of the Eredivisie table.
Vitesse Arnhem v Willem II: Visitors stun Vitesse
Willem II, without a victory in 2016, stunned Vitesse as a second half Terell Ondaan header sealed an unlikely win in Arnhem.
A victory would have seen the home side move into the top four but despite an improved second half display Vitesse were undone by the visitors’ sucker punch. And Willem II held firm to collect a vital three points in the battle for survival.
Heracles Almelo 0 v 5 Roda JC: Honeymoon over for Heracles
Roda JC hammered Heracles with a five star display in Almelo. Georgiy Zhukov opened the scoring by stroking home a Kristoffer Petersen cross on 28 minutes. And the floodgates opened.
Two goals in six minutes either side of halftime had put Roda out of sight, with Mike van Duinen and Rydell Poepon on target.
Poepon added his second and Roda’s fourth before substitute Maecky Ngombo capped of a memorable night for the visitors in injury time.
Utrecht 1 v 2 Feyenoord: Feyenoord stop the rot in Utrecht
After eight games without a win, including a run of seven straight defeats, Feyenoord finally claimed a long awaited victory in the Domstad.
The visiting fans must have feared the worst when Utrecht striker Sebastian Haller gave the hosts a four minute lead.
However, those worries were allayed when Michiel Kramer found Tonny Vilhena in the box to bring the teams level on 20 minutes, before captain Dirk Kuijt put the visitors ahead just on halftime.
Utrecht pushed for a second half equaliser, with Haller and Ruud Boymans both being denied by goalline clearances, but Feyenoord hung on to claim a first win in nine games.
De Graafschap 0 v 1 Heerenveen: Smash and grab in Doetinchem
A 78th minute Morten Thorsby goal gave Heerenveen all the points in a game De Graafschap will wonder how they failed to win.
The hosts pushed their opponents back from the start and continued to dominate throughout, yet were left ruing a hosts of missed chances.
And they were made to pay in the latter stages as Thorsby tapped home from close range after Heerenveen managed to muster their only meaningful attack of the game.
The painful defeat pulls De Graafschap back to the foot of the table, while Heerenveen sit twelfth.
Ajax v AZ Alkmaar: AZ run of form ended in Amsterdam
Ajax ran away with a game many thought would be a real test for the championship challengers. In form Arkadiusz Milik gave Ajax a 14th minute lead and the Amsterdammers never looked in danger against a disappointing AZ.
The lead was doubled before the break after Amin Younes found captain Davy Klaassen at the near post. And it was Klaassen, punishing a mix up in the AZ defence, who put the game beyond the visitors early in the second period.
Despite Anwar El Ghazi collecting two yellow cards, and a Vincent Janssen goal on 64 minutes, Ajax remained relatively comfortable before Polish forward Milik sealed the victory in the dying moments.
