Amsterdam restaurants to experiment with up-front payments

Several Amsterdam restaurants are planning to make customers who reserve online pay for part of their meal up front, the Parool reports on Wednesday.

The paper says some restaurants are so fed up with no-shows and late cancellations that they aim to introduce a ‘deposit’ system via reservation website Couverts.nl.

‘No shows cost restaurateurs money,’ said Couverts spokesman Paul Wiertz.

The trial begins in March and involves three city restaurants but their names have not yet been made public. If the system is a success, Couverts will expand the option nationwide. Some 2,600 restaurants use its system.

Joris Prinssen of catering industry association Horeca Nederland told the paper he has his doubts about the new plan. In particular, paying a deposit may not reflect the hospitable and accessible welcome which restaurants want to offer, he said.
