Amsterdam is Europe’s seventh most popular city destination
Amsterdammers may complain that their city is being overrun with tourists but the Dutch capital but still has some way to go to catch up with London, Paris and Rome.
Amsterdam is 27th on a new ranking of the most popular tourist cities with 5.7 million overseas visitors in 2014.
The Euromonitor International ranking is topped by Hong Kong, followed by London and Singapore and is based on the number of recorded international visitors. Asian cities account for one-third of the top 100.
10% rise
Amsterdam, the report states, saw tourist numbers rise nearly 10% in 2014 to 5.7 million. London, by contrast, had nearly 16.8 million overseas visitors, Paris 15 million and Rome nearly nine million.
The Dutch capital is sandwiched between Barcelona and Vienna on the list and is the seventh most popular European city.
Amsterdam is the only Dutch city on the list. Figures from the Dutch tourist board put the total number of tourists in the Netherlands in 2014 at 9.8 million.
