Young women most likely to be suspected of shoplifting
Over 41,000 women were registered as crime suspects last year, the national statistics office CBS said on Tuesday.
This means five in 1,000 women in the Netherlands are a crime suspect, compared with 20 per 1,000 men, the CBS figures show.
The statistics also show men are six times more likely to be suspected of violent crime than women. Women aged 18 to 25 outstrip men as shoplifting suspects.
Teenage girls with an Antillian or Aruban background are more likely to be suspected of crimes than other women. By contrast, young men, aged 12 to 25 and of Moroccan origin are more likely that anyone else to be suspected of a crime.
The figures do not cover actual conviction rates, the CBS points out.
