Sjoemelsoftware (software which influences the result of tests, as in the  Volkswagen emissions fiddle) has been voted Dutch Word of the Year by visitors to the Van Dale dictionary website.

Sjoemelsoftware was also chosen as word of the year by members of Dutch language association Onze Taal.

Second place in the Van Dale vote went to poortjesspringer – or someone who jumps over the turnstile at a railway station without a ticket. Third was Je suis, used to show solidarity with the victims of terrorist attacks.
