Italian police find 800 rifles in a Dutch lorry
Italian police have seized more than 800 pump-action rifles from a lorry with Dutch number plates as it crossed over the border at Trieste, Italian news agency Ansa says on Thursday.
The driver was a Turkish national who was planning to head for Germany, the Netherlands and finally Belgium, Ansa says.
The cargo consisted of over 800 Winchester SXP guns packed in hundreds of cardboard boxes and had not been declared at the border.
Italian police decided to check out the lorry as it crossed the border on November 23 because they considered the cargo and the journey pattern to be suspicious, the Telegraaf says in its report.
Border checks have been stepped up in Italy following the Paris terrorist attacks.
