Eredivisie weekend round up: Ajax and Feyenoord hit five as PSV falter
PSV were held at Willem II, Ajax and Feyenoord fire five apiece. Foppe de Haan suffers first defeat, while Michael de Leeuw lit up Doetinchem with a wonder strike, writes Neil Adderley.
AZ Alkmaar 3 v 1 Heerenveen: AZ halt De Haan’s unbeaten run
Goals from Vincent Janssen and Mounir El Hamdaoui put an end to interim Heerenveen trainer Foppe de Haan’s unbeaten run.
Heerenveen looked to be continuing in a rich vein of form after Mitchell Te Vrede gave de Haan’s men a five minute lead.
But AZ drew level ten minutes later when Vincent Janssen netted the first of two goals.
And the visitors’ resistance waned when man of the match El Hamdaoui forced home a strike from a tight angle on 40 minutes.
The game was eventually decided on 75 minutes when Janssen bundled home the ball after good work from Alireza Jahanbakhsh.
Roda JC 0 v 5 PEC Zwolle: PEC back to form with thumping victory
Ron Jans’ PEC Zwolle put a four game winless run behind them by destroying Roda in Kerkrade.
It took just four minutes for the visitors to go in front as Wouter Marinus calmly finished a sweeping PEC move.
Ryan Thomas was the star of the show for PEC, and the diminutive winger doubled the lead on 15 minutes.
The New Zealander picking himself up after being upended in the box, before making no mistake from 12 yards.
And it was Thomas who piled on the misery for RODA with a fine early second half strike, before striker Lars Veldwijk made it four on the hour mark.
RODA’s awful evening was sealed in injury time when striker Stef Nijland completed the rout.
Ajax 5 v 1 Cambuur Leeuwarden: Ajax run riot over struggling Cambuur
Without a victory all season, the omens for Cambuur were not great, and so it proved to be as Ajax cruised to victory at the ArenA.
Unfazed by a first half fan boycott due to perceived unrest at board level, the league leaders raced into a 41 first half lead.
Cambuur, who held Ajax at bay until the 25th minute, gave their travelling fans hope when Sander van de Streek equalised Joel Veltman’s opener.
However, the joy was short lived as Arkadiusz Milik and a Davy Klaassen double gave the hosts an unassailable first half lead.
Somewhat predictably, the second half failed to scale the heights of the first, although Amin Younes eventually made it five to leave Ajax three points clear at the top of the table.
De Graafschap 1 v 2 Groningen: Stunning De Leeuw strike hands Groningen three points
A sublime goal of the season contender by Michael de Leeuw proved enough for the away side to claim a first victory of the season on the road.
The Groningen striker doubled the visitors’ lead with a goal that will remain long in the memory.
Picking the ball up and going at the De Graafschap defence, de Leeuw checked his run on the corner of the penalty box, before chipping a sublime effort over the keeper and into the top corner.
Slovakian international Albert Rusnak had deservedly given Groningen a first half lead.
And despite the hosts pulling a goal back through a Nathan Kabasele penalty, it was fitting that De Leeuw’s wonder strike would earn all the points for Groningen.
Willem II 2 v 2 PSV Eindhoven: Champions falter in Tilburg
PSV failed to overcome a stubborn Willem II to leave themselves trailing league leaders Ajax by four points.
Despite taking an early lead through Gaston Pereiro, the reigning champions failed to build on the advantage, and they were made to pay in the second half when a quick fire Erik Falkenburg double gave the hosts a shock lead.
Eredivisie leading scorer and captain, Luuk de Jong, eventually spared PSV blushes with a drilled equaliser, but Willem II held on comfortably for a deserved point.
Heracles Almelo 0 v 0 Excelsior: Heracles and Excelsior fire a blank in Almelo
Heracles have been the sensation of the Eredivisie season so far, but it was Excelsior who will feel hard done by after coming away with only a point.
Chief culprit for the visitors was the usually reliable Tom van Weert. The striker failing to find the net twice from close range when scoring seemed easier.
However, Van Weert was not alone, as both Brandley Kuwas and Jurgen Mattheij passed up excellent chances to give Excelsior an away victory.
Heracles failed to find anything like their early season form, but will be revealed to have secured a point against an impressive, if wasteful Excelsior.
Feyenoord 5 v 0 FC Twente: Feyenoord cruise past Twente and into second place
Simon Gustafson starred for the Rotterdammers as Feyenoord heaped more pain on struggling FC Twente.
The young Swedish international opened proceedings after just six minutes, finishing clinically from a Eljero Elia cross.
And midfielder Gustafson showed his eye for goal once again by following up a Michiel Kramer effort to increase the home side’s lead on 26 minutes.
Kramer finally broke his duck at De Kuip by nodding home a 46th minute Dirk Kuijt cross, before Karim El Ahmadi made it four just minutes later.
Twente’s nightmare afternoon continued when within a minute of his introduction, substitute Tim Holscher was shown a straight red card.
And another day to forget for the away team was sealed in injury time, as substitute Bilal Basacikoglu completed the Feyenoord rout.
NEC Nijmegen 1 v 0 Utrecht: Santos once again the talisman for NEC
Christian Santos is quickly becoming a cult hero in Nijmegen, and the Venezuelan born striker did his reputation no harm with another winner at Stadion de Goffert.
In a scrappy affair, it was Utrecht who created the best opportunities, but Nacer Barazite and Bart Ramselaar could find no way past NEC keeper Benjamin Kirsten.
Utrecht continued to dominate, but a rash challenge on Navarone Foor by Yassin Ayoub gifted the hosts a penalty, and club top scorer Santos fired the winner to move NEC into fifth place in the table.
ADO Den Haag 2 v 2 Vitesse Arnhem: All square at the Kyocera Stadium
Despite twice falling behind, ADO fought back to claim a point in Den Haag.
Vitesse started the brighter and gained an early advantage as Sheran Yeini collected a Maikel van der Werff pass, before slotting past Martin Hansen in the ADO goal.
The hosts eventually gained a foothold and were twice denied an equaliser by Vitesse keeper Eloy Room, before Ruben Schaken levelled matters on the half hour.
Vitesse regained the lead, albeit against the run of play, as Kelvin Leerdam headed home a Lewis Baker free kick on the stroke of half time.
Leerdam then turned villain for Vitesse when the defender was adjudged to have impeded ADO striker Mike Havenaar in the box. Leaving Timothy Derijck to make no mistake from the spot and secure a valuable point for the hosts.
