Teenagers who kicked linesman to death face life football ban
Four teenagers sentenced to youth detention for their role in the 2013 killing of a football linesman have been banned from officially playing the game for life.
The Dutch football association KNVB said on Monday that a maximum ban of 36 months for juveniles was not severe enough in this case, hence the life-time ban. A fifth teenager has been banned from the game for five years.
Richard Nieuwenhuizen died in hospital the day after being attacked by a group of youths after a B youth match between Almere club Buitenboys and Amsterdam side Nieuwe Sloten.
The attack on Nieuwenhuizen forced the Dutch football association KNVB to implement new measures, including a hotline, to try to stop off-the-pitch violence.
