Narrow majority of Dutch MPs back bombing Syria
A narrow majority of Dutch MPs support the direct bombing of IS targets in Syria, news agency ANP says on Thursday.
The ChristenUnie has now added its voice to support for direct bombing, as has one independent MP. This, ANP says, means there is majority support for a change in the Dutch position.
The Netherlands has always insisted there be an international mandate for direct intervention in Syria. The Netherlands is currently involved in bombing missions over Iraq and has a team of 350 people training local soldiers.
However, foreign affairs minister Bert Koenders told MPs on Wednesday evening he is not in favour of a ‘speedy’ change of course. In addition, he said he is worried about the number of unilateral decisions being taken on attacking IS targets there.
Australia on Wednesday announced it would start direct bombing in Syria itself. However, Koenders says the international coalition must continue to work together as much as possible.
Army chief Tom Middendorp told the NRC this summer there is ‘little chance’ of a solution to the fight against Islamic militant group IS unless the organisation is also tackled in Syria.
