Disappointment for Dutch clubs in European football
Amsterdam football club Ajax managed no more than a draw against Glasgow Celtic at home and both Groningen and AZ lost in the opening round of the Europa League competition.
Ajax drew 2-2 against Celtic after Lasse Schöne equalised from a free kick in the 84th minute.
There were 27 arrests in Amsterdam before and after the match – 10 involving supporters who did not belong to either club, police said on Friday. In total, 17 Celtic and Ajax fans were picked up.
There was also trouble involving supporters of French side Olympic Marseille who went on the rampage through central Groningen prior to their match. One woman in a cafe was injured by fireworks and riot police were brought in to restore order. It is not clear how many people were arrested.
Groningen lost their first Europa League game to the French side 3-0.
AZ, who were away to Serbian side Partizan Belgrado, lost 3-2.
