The Netherlands’ oldest circus is set to bow out
The Netherlands’ oldest circus troupe Herman Renz is in financial difficulty and has until September 7 to clear its debts or go bankrupt.
The circus has been struggling with falling audiences and says government bureaucracy is also to blame. ‘We have been trying to survive for the past two years but last winter in particular was very difficult,’ director Milko Steijvers told RTL Z.
A private investor took over the company two years ago but the circus has been unable to pay back the debt and government subsidies offer the only chance of survival, Steijvers said.
Circus Herman Renz was founded 115 years ago. Two years ago it phased out wild animals.
