Roda JC shirt sponsor stops paying; club is struggling
Premier league football club Roda JC did not receive any money from shirt sponsor Solland Solar in July.
Solland Solar, which manufacturers solar panels, became the Kerkrade club’s shirt sponsor at the beginning of this season.
According to local broadcaster L1, the €36,300 payment due each month was not paid in July.
The Heerlen-based company is in financial problems and has filed for bankruptcy.
Roda JC, which returned to the premier division this season, has been struggling financially since 2009. Director Wim Collard said the club was €1.3m in the red last season, having lost €2.7m when it was relegated in season 2013/14.
The club is currently in the Dutch football association’s category 1 of clubs in financial straits. These clubs are expected to get their finances in order within three years or lose their licence to play professional football.
