Dutch win jumping gold at European Championships

The Dutch show jumping team took the gold medal at the European Championships in Aachen on Friday evening.

Three virtually perfect rounds by Jeroen Dubbeldam, Maikel van der Vleuten and Jur Vrieling were enough to clinch the title. The fourth round by Gerco Schröder was a formality, after the German Daniel Deusser threw away his chance to beat the Dutch, news agency ANP reported.

It is the fourth European title for the Dutch team, following wins in 1977, 1991 and 2007. Last year the team won the world title.

Dressage

Ten days ago, the Dutch dressage team was the surprise winner of the European Championships.

The home side and current world champions, Germany, were expected to take the gold, with Great Britain taking silver and the Netherlands in third place with bronze.

In the event, it was Dutch rider Edward Gal who tipped the scales in his team’s favour.
