Online retail growth slows but retailers’ earnings rise
The number of people in the Netherlands who shop online continues to grow, even though the increase is now only marginal, the national statistics office CBS said on Friday.
In 2014, 10.4 million out of the population of almost 17 million said they had bought something online, up from 10.3 million in 2013. However, turnover in the online retail sector rose 11% over the year, the CBS said.
Eight million people are described as frequent online shoppers and have bought at least one thing in the past three months.
Travel and clothing still head the list and are bought by two-thirds of internet shoppers. Over 50% have bought tickets for an event online.
The biggest increase was in the sale of household goods. Almost four in 10 people said they had bought furniture, games or domestic appliances via the internet, compared with just over three in 10 a year ago.
