Dutch Turk extradited to US on Afghanistan terror charges
A 56-year-old Turkish Dutch national has been extradited to the US to face terrorism charges.
The man, named as Irfan Demirtas, is alleged to have raised money and support for Islamic militants fighting in Afghanistan and faces up to 30 years in jail.
He appeared in court in the US on Monday and was charged that he ‘raised money and recruited fighters for a foreign terrorist organization battling the Afghan government and its allies, including US troops,’ news agency Reuters reported.
The man is said to have helped the group between 2006 and 2008 and his activities are said to have taken place in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkey, Jordan, the Netherlands, and France. He was arrested in Germany in January on an international warrant.
