Paul McCartney gets his own tulip
Musician Paul McCartney, who has just performed two sell-out concerts in Amsterdam, has had a tulip named after him.
The red tulip with white edges has been 20 years in development and will be commercially available in limited quantities in 2016.
‘It has been a long-cherished wish of mine to honour my musical hero with a Dutch tulip,’ said grower Jaap Uittenbogaard, who created the bulb as a member of the Remarkable Tulips growers’ association in Lisse.
McCartney, presented with the tulip backstage before the show, said he will plant it in his London garden next spring. According to Uittenbogaard, who doused the blooms with champagne, McCartney said he was particularly pleased by the colours.
The red, he said, represents love and the white stands for unlimited possibilities.
