New herring season starts as auction raises €53,000
The traditional auction of the first barrel of the new season’s herring raised €53,000 for charity.
The barrel was bought by the Visgilde, an association of specialist fish shops, and the money will go to a charity for the elderly to organise ‘herring and beach outings’.
The auction marks the start of the new herring season, which was delayed this year because the fish were not fat enough.
