Dutch shipbuilder IHC to cut 1,600 jobs, close two shipyards

June 10, 2015

Globalen Schiffbau optimieren: IHC Merwede standardisiert auf PLM Software von Siemens / IHC Merwede standardizes on Siemens' PLM software for global shipbuilding optimizationDutch shipbuilder IHC is closing two of its four wharves with the loss of almost 500 permanent and 1,100 temporary jobs, the NRC says on Wednesday.

The company will retain its Krimpen aan den Ijssel and Kinderdijk shipyards and its Sliedrecht headquarters but the shipyards in Sliedrecht and Hardinxveld will close. Some production will be shifted abroad, the paper says.

IHC primarily produces vessels for the offshore oil industry. Its order portfolio has been hit as oil firms scale back their investments because of the drop in oil prices.

In addition, a large number of temporary employees had been brought in for a major order for Brazil and no replacement project has been found, the NRC says.

The company has a global workforce of 3,300, of whom 2,800 are in the Netherlands.
