Dutch football coach Guus Hiddink may step back
Dutch national football coach Guus Hiddink is considering stepping back and giving the lead to Danny Blind, the Telegraaf reports on Monday.
Oranje, who came third in last year’s World Cup, managed to beat Latvia 0-2 in a crucial European championship qualifier on Friday but are still struggling in third place in group A. This means they may have to take part in play-offs to qualify for the 2016 tournament.
According to the Telegraaf, Hiddink, who is now on holiday in France, may reduce his role to that of ‘senior national coach’
‘I have my ideas about a role as senior national coach,’ Hiddink told the paper. ‘But before I take a decision and go public, I want to discuss it with others. How long will that take? Oh I think about an hour.’
According to the football association’s Bert van Oostveen, the role of senior coach was discussed when Hiddink took the job at the beginning of last season. ‘If Hiddink and Blind are ready, then so is the KNVB,’ he said.
Oranje will play key qualification games against Iceland and Turkey at the beginning of September. Iceland currently leads group A. Turkey is one place behind Oranje on eight points.
