Ahold, Delhaize aim for merger deal before the summer

Albert HeijnSupermarket groups Ahold and Delhaize are hoping to complete their merger talks this month, sources close to the discussions told news agency Bloomberg.

A merger between the Dutch market leader and Belgium’s Delhaize would generate annual cost savings of between €300m and €700m, the sources said, adding that the companies hope for a deal before the summer break starts in July.

The sources told Bloomberg the cost savings relate to purchasing, supply chain and administration and that they do not see significant store closures ahead.

Ahold and Delhaize announced on May 12 that they are in merger talks. Both companies also have significant interests in the US.
