Food fads and weird diets leave most Dutch cold
The Dutch are not impressed by food fads and strange diets, according to a report by market research group Gfk for the Dutch food experts network NVVL.
Some 70% of those polled said the trends and hypes are ‘rubbish’ and 56% stick to the classic Dutch focus on five food groups known as the ‘schijf van vijf’, which was devised in 1953.
Just 3% said they had taken part in a diet hype such as the Paleo diet and 80% have never bought so-called superfoods such as goji berries or chia seeds.
‘The media focus on food hypes does not mean we are rushing from one food guru to another,’ said NVVL spokeswoman Elly Kaldenberg. ‘The opposite is true. Traditional Dutch down to earthness still dominates in our kitchens and supermarkets.’
