FC Utrecht faces €10,000 fine for anti-semitic chants
The Dutch football association KNVB wants to fine FC Utrecht €10,000 for anti-semitic chanting at a match against Ajax in early April.
During the match, which ended in a 1-1 draw, supporters were clearly heard chanting about having a mother in the SS and ‘Jews burning best’. The video was placed online and picked up by the Telegraaf newspaper.
Ajax players and supporters are nicknamed de Joden – the Jews – although opinion is divided as to the reason.
Jewish groups had called for action after the chanting and say FC Utrecht is partly responsible because the club took no action to stop its supporters.
As well as the fine, the KNVB says the part of Utrecht’s stadium where hardcore supporters sit should be closed at the next home match against Ajax.
FC Utrecht has until June 1 to react to the KNVB proposal.
