Turkish court finds Dutch journalist not guilty of terrorist propaganda
A Dutch journalist who was charged with producing ‘propaganda for a terrorist organisation’ has been found not guilty by a court in Turkey.
Fréderike Geerdink works for the Parool and Groen Amsterdammer and was picked up for questioning in January while Dutch foreign minister Bert Koenders was in Turkey.
Last week, the Turkish public prosecutor said Geerdink should be found not guilty, arguing she cannot be convicted under Turkish anti-terror laws. The evidence offered against her – her blog, Twitter and Facebook accounts – does not include calls to violence, the prosecutor said.
In a reaction Geerdink said she was pleased to be able to get back to work. ‘This has all taken a lot of time,’ she said.
Geerdink was accused of making pro-PKK propaganda by sharing the Kurdish organisation’s flags and members’ activities on social media and could have been jailed for up to five years.
