Police officer guilty of causing fatal accident
A policeman has been found guilty of causing a fatal accident in which an 18-year-old girl died when she was hit by a police BMW on its way to an emergency.
The police officer was given a suspended six-month driving ban, despite the public prosecution department calling for his acquittal.
The officer was heading to an incident in Eindhoven as part of a motorcade of police vehicles with sirens and flashing lights in 2013. He drove through a red light on the bus lane without slowing, hitting the girl who was crossing the road on her moped.
The court ruled the officer should have slowed down when approaching the junction to take account of the action of other road users. According to the court documents, he was driving at 90 kph.
The victim’s family took the case to court in protest at the police decision not to take legal action against the officer.
