From Little Asia to Armenian Twente: mapping the immigrant community in Holland
Just over 10% of the population of the Netherlands was not born in the country, according to research by Brabant newspaper Tubantia.
In total, 1.8 million of the population of almost 17 million were born abroad, and have 200 different nationalities between them, Tubantia says.
The newspaper has compiled an interactive map showing who lives where, using information from the national statistics office CBS.
The research shows immigrant populations are concentrated in particular cities. For example, 75% of the country’s Cape Verdi population live in Rotterdam, while people from Asia – and cricket clubs – dominate in Amstelveen.
The interactive map shows Australians, Americans, the British, Canadians, French and Austrians are concentrated in the wealthy town of Wassenaar, close to The Hague.
Most Poles can be found in Westland, where the market gardening industry is based. And Twente has the biggest population of Armenian Christians from Iraq, Turkey, Syria and Armenia.
