Dutch are ‘considering’ accepting two Guantanamo prisoners: NRC
The US recently asked the Netherlands to take in two prisoners who are about to be freed from the notorious Guantanamo Bay prison camp, the NRC says on Thursday.
The request has been confirmed by ‘diplomatic sources’ and foreign minister Bert Koenders says it is ‘under consideration’, the paper states.
It is unclear who the two prisoners are or what nationality they have.
The issue is sensitive in the Netherlands because there has always been a parliamentary majority against accepting Guantanamo prisoners. Many other EU countries have taken them in.
US president Barack Obama has pledged to close the prison but Congress has banned him from allowing any former prisoners into the US. There are currently 122 people still in custody, of whom 56 do not face any charges and can be released.
