Passenger numbers at Dutch airports reached a record high of 60 million in 2014, 5% up on the year before, national statistics agency CBS said on Tuesday.

Of the 60 million, 90% travelled through Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport which is the fastest growing airport in western Europe.

Both Rotterdam and Eindhoven airports booked an increase in passenger numbers. Eindhoven grew to four million passengers, mainly due to a doubling in the number of destinations. In 2009, just 3.6% of the total number of passengers used Eindhoven. In 2014, the figure grew to 6.5%.

Groningen and Maastricht airports saw passenger numbers fall.

Maastricht has been losing passengers for years, and received a €4.5m capital injection from Limburg province in 2013 to stave off bankruptcy. On Tuesday, the airport said it has four possible buyers but declined to name them.
