Wintry weather causes record traffic jams
The wintry weather is causing serious problems for road and rail commuters on Thursday, with jams of over 30 km in the morning rush hour and signalling and points problems on the trains in Groningen and Breda.
By 8.30 am there was around 530 km of traffic jams, with particular problems on the A2 between Den Bosch and Utrecht (32 km) and the A27 from Breda to Utrecht (22 km).
The icy roads are also causing long queues on the A50 and A59 around Oss, which was closed on Wednesday night due to the weather conditions and reopened on Thursday morning.
Motoring organisation ANWB said it is the busiest morning rush hour so far this year.
Rail company NS is experiencing problems with signalling and points on the line between Groningen and Leeuwarden and between Breda and Roosendaal. NS does not say if this is due to the weather conditions.
The NS says it is running a normal service on Thursday.
