Protesting Amsterdam students move to admin centre

Maagdenhuis_(Amsterdam)A number of protesting students in Amsterdam have turned their attention to the university’s administration centre Maagdenhuis, forcing their way in on Wednesday night following a protest march.

Around 1,500 students took part in the demonstration, with some 200 entering the building. Around 30 slept on the premises, the Parool reports.

The students were evicted from another university property on Tuesday after a 12-day sit-in. They are demanding more say in university affairs, the end of plans to merge several language courses and an end to university property sales.

Amsterdam mayor Eberhard van der Laan and the city’s police chief met the protestors on Wednesday night. Education minister Jet Bussemaker will visit the students on Thursday afternoon.

Louise Gunning, chairman of the University of Amsterdam management board, called on the demonstrators to leave the building.

‘If you are democratic, than you don’t occupy other people’s property,’ she said. ‘I do not accept you occupying this building.’
