Another fatal shooting in Amsterdam (update)

MAN DOODGESCHOTENThere was another fatal shooting in Amsterdam on Wednesday when a man was shot dead in a car park under a block of flats in the west of the city.

The man was later named as Ron Nyqvist (46), a Germany national who had just been released from jail for a double murder in 2001.

Police are looking at various scenarios, including the possibility that Nyqvist killed himself, the Parool says. Nyqvist, a keen kickboxer, was a member of a violent drugs gang in Brabant in the 1990s, the paper says.

Amsterdam has been hit by a string of gangland shootings in recent weeks.

Last weekend there were three shooting incidents in Amsterdam within a 12-hour period, one of which was fatal and presumed gang-related.

The city’s police said on Tuesday they had foiled another killing with the arrest of four people at the weekend.

Mistaken identity

A week ago a man was shot dead in the same neighbourhood as today’s killing. That is now thought to be a case of mistaken identity.

On January 14, a 60-year-old Turkish woman was shot dead on the balcony of her home in Amsterdam. And on December 31, a known Dutch-Turkish criminal named as Okan Fidan was shot in his car.

Three known Dutch-Turkish gang members have also been shot in Turkey and Panama since the end of December. Two were killed, one remains in hospital in Panama city.
