Strong winds set to continue into Tuesday
The gale force winds which have been battering the Netherlands since Friday are continuing in coastal areas on Monday, weather bureau KNMI said.
The KNMI has issued a code yellow weather warning for Zeeland, Zuid-Holland, Noord-Holland, Friesland and Groningen because of the strong winds.
The wind has particularly affected motorists in the coastal region, with traffic jams reaching over 330 kilometres in the morning rush hour.
The wind will die down in the evening but will pick up again overnight and on Tuesday morning. The code yellow weather warning will then affect Noord-Holland and the Wadden Sea area, the KNMI said.
The strong winds have brought down trees and caused some damage to buildings. Flights to and from Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport have also been disrupted.
